The Origin of Salisbury Steak

The Salisbury steak gets its name from its creator, Dr. James Salisbury, a physician during the Civil War. Salisbury believed that food was the key to health and hypothesized that particular foods could be used to cure diseases.

While treating soldiers with intestinal woes during the war, he tested his idea by only feeding chopped meat to the ailing soldiers. Salisbury chose lean beef because he believed it was the easiest food to digest.

In 1888, he published a book of his findings called The Relation of Alimentation and Disease. This book became very popular and ushered in what can be considered the first “fad” diet in American history. He was also one of the first Americans to promote a low-carb diet as a means for weight loss.

I have not made this yet so I cannot rate it.

Yum! This Salisbury steak looks so tender. I also loved reading about the origin of Salisbury steak - so interesting!

When ever I run across a recipe for Salisbury steak I do not know why but I think about my Grandmother. I guess because when we would visit during the summer for weeks at a time, we could depend on having her delicious Salisbury steak.

Who needs the frozen dinner Salisbury steak when you can make your own. Makes me want to go out and buy a old fashioned meat grinder. My mother always made her own hamburger meat. Making it on your own you can select the better meat although cooking it for a few hours does tenderize it. Nothing like meat and potatoes with not a lot of work. This recipe works for me. And meanwhile I think I will look around for a meat grinder. LOL. Thanks or the recipe.

Salisbury Steak is one of my husband's favorite meals. We have it at least once a week. Preparing it this way will take some time away from slaving over a hot stove. Not that I don't LOVE to cook (ha-ha). With hamburger being one of the cheaper meats, this will go in my recipe collection.

This is a meal my family will love. My husband is seriously a meat and potatoes kind of guy so this will be a winner. Slow cooker recipes are popular at my house because we love having the dinner ready by six o'clock without the dinner time rush. Plus, the meat is always so tender after cooking all day.
