Ingredients

  • 2 (16-ounce) cans of stewed tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 (15-1/2-ounce) cans of light red kidney beans, drained
  • 1 cup Hunt's tomato sauce special
  • 1 cup white wine
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • salt (to taste)
  • chopped green onions (to taste)
  • grated cheddar cheese (to taste)
  • red pepper flakes (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Brown lean ground beef with chopped onions and garlic. Once browned, drain excess fat. 

  2. Combine all ingredients into a slow cooker, and mix thoroughly. Set slow cooker on low for 7-8 hours. 

  3. Once your cactus chili is done, serve it up with some of your favorite toppings. Sour cream, cheese, and green onions all make excellent additions!

Some really dense cornbread cut into triangles would be a great accompaniment to this Cactus Chili. What exactly is the Hunt's tomato sauce special? I will admit I do not know what this special sauce is. It is also interesting that it calls for a cup of white wine.

@TOM701, Thanks for your comment. I believe it was more of a cute name for the recipe. However, cactus would be a great addition to the chili recipe. You can cook Nopales cactus much like you would green pepper. Let us know how it turns out if you make it! --Editor of AllFreeSlowCookerRecipe
