Notes

Monkey bread has a fairly murky origin story. It seems to just appear out of nowhere in American cookbooks during the mid 1900s. The bread, originally a savory treat, is now often composed of pieces of dough rolled in sugar and other sweet toppings. It's a staple of Sunday breakfasts (or desserts) in many American homes. Monkey bread seems to be related to a Hungarian dessert called aranygaluska, which is prepared in a similar fashion, although a direct relationship between the recipes isn't certain. It's thought that the name monkey bread comes from the resemblance between the dessert and the fruit of the monkey puzzle tree.

Several celebrities in the later half of the 20th century helped popularize this sticky dessert bread. Actress ZaSu Pitts in the 1940s and First Lady Nancy Reagan in the 1980s both served monkey bread to their guests, which helped catapult the bread into the consciousness of mainstream America.
