Notes

*Recipe calls for plastic slow cooker liner bag, but it is not necessary unless you plan on cooking two meals together in the slow cooker in separate liner bags.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 of a half-pound sirloin tip, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced or 1/2 teaspoon bottled minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dark sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 green onions, sliced (white and green parts)
  • crushed red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  1. Insert plastic slow cooker liner bag into slow cooker.

  2. Add sirloin to the bottom of the liner. Season with pepper.

  3. Top sirloin with onion and garlic.

  4. Stir together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and five-spice powder in a small bowl.

  5. Pour over sirloin.

  6. Reserve green onions and crushed red pepper flakes to top finished dish for serving.

  7. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 hours.

What is hoisin sauce? I have come across several recipes that call for it, but I have no idea what it is or how to use it in a dish. What does it go on besides beef dishes? I like the use of green onions in the dish. Do you have a preference on what vegetable you serve this with or no?
