I am impressed that you can make chili with dollar store food items. How simple and inexpensive this recipe is! I would look for a jar of jalapenos so my husband could top off his chili. Also, many dollar stores sell the small box of cornbread mix for fifty cents, so that would make a great side for the chili.

I eat my chili with some kind of meat. Mostly it is ground turkey. But you know what? When a person has very little money to spend on feeding a family, you do what you have to do. There's lots of protein in legumes. So no worries there. In some dollar stores you can buy cheese, too, so add that to the list of ingredients to be had. This is a great basic recipe for a newly independent kid in the family.
