How to Cook Cabbage in a Slow Cooker

How to Cook Cabbage in a Slow Cooker

  1. Remove the outer leaves. These leaves are usually tough and won’t taste great even when they are cooked.
  2. Rinse the cabbage. Wash the outside of the head of cabbage under running water.
  3. Cut the head into quarters. It’s not necessary, but if you would like to rinse the inside of the cabbage, this is the best time to do it.
  4. Remove the core. Using a sharp knife, cut out the core from each wedge. It is too tough to eat and can have a bitter taste.
  5. Cut or shred the cabbage. The cabbage can be shredded into thin strips, cut into larger chunks, or even kept as wedges. It just depends on your preference and recipe.
  6. Add broth and seasonings. Once you’ve added the cabbage to the slow cooker, add in the broth of your choice (vegetable or chicken). Salt, pepper, garlic, and onions are also great for seasoning cabbage.
  7. Cooking time depends on preference. If you like softer cooked cabbage, cook it on low for about 10 hours or high for 6 hours. If you prefer cabbage that is lightly cooked, cook it on low for 5 hours or high for about 2 1/2 hours.

When I was a kid I loooved corned beef. I don't eat beef anymore, but I still love Irish soda bread!

My mother-in-law's Irish soda bread is heaven. I crave it all year!

I'm not usually the biggest fan of cooked cabbage, but I do like it on St. Patrick's Day when it's cooked with potatoes and corned beef.

Irish soda bread is my absolute favorite. It's especially great with a bit of butter.

I mostly just enjoy our usual corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots (the veggies are my favorite portion of the meal). This year though, we had it all in a stew form, and it was FABULOUS

I actually don't have a favorite St. Patrick's Day recipe. I'm not a fan of cabbage, so that rules out many of the most popular dishes for the holiday.
